The buzzer rang at 6:30 this morning
but I was up for hours already -
not in anxious anticipation
like a child who can't sleep
on Christmas Eve,
but rather
like a traveler preparing for
one last trip through town
on her final day of vacation.
Today was Sam's last "first day of school"...
…there will never be
another morning like this one.
Tomorrow will not be a first day of school
for all my boys...together
as brothers
leaving from the same house
like they did this morning
after gulping down
the last remnants of breakfast.
Tomorrow's alarm will not herald
the same morning schedule
like it did this morning ~
long showers with wonderings about
friends,
grades,
teachers
and lunch tables.
Tomorrow's pictures will not show
the special back to school outfit
selected for its boost
of self-confidence and expression
like it did today.
Tomorrow's dinner will not include
"So, how was the first day of school?"
like it will this evening.
with all three boys
spread along the margins of
our dinner table.
And yet
Tomorrow will include
laughing
school
breakfasts
dinners
hugs
kisses
music
playing
some tears
some frustrations
but hopefully - mostly laughing.
It may have been a "last first day" today
But it is not the last of everything.
There are many more firsts ahead.
Those are some very handsome boys-first, middle and last! I feel the same about "the firsts". Excited for the unknown adventures! I also love that picture of Gage, Solomon's is almost identical-big cheesy grin.
ReplyDeleteSo well put. Loved reading it. It put a lump in my throat as I think about what's ahead of me...so far away and yet right around the corner. So MANY firsts ahead of me too!!!!! Such a good way of looking at it.....
